HOST TYPE
The kind of operating system a web server runs on. We have typically UNIX based systems and Windows based systems.

IIS
Stands for Internet Information Services. A server operating under Windows. Another type of server is Apache , operating under UNIX.

FTP
Short form for file transfer protocol. A means through which files are transported across the internet. It is a popular tool for loading websites onto a server remotely.

A program, basically a form and database that keeps track of comments made by a visitor to a site.

PERL
Practical Extraction and Report Language. A server side scripting language used to create dynamic and interactive web content.

RAW ACCESS DATA
Server data that can be downloaded and manipulated by a statistics program to provide meaningful information about a website traffic.

ASP
Active Server Pages. A server side scripting language. Microsoft version of php.

CGI-BIN
A directory on the server from where CGI scripts are executed.

PHP
Originally meaning Personal Home Page and now Pre-hypertext processor. The most popular server side programming tool on the internet.

MySQL
A form of database mostly used on the web for its flexibility and ability to work harmoniously with php.

POP
Post office protocol. Form of email downloaded in bulk from an ISP. In contrast to web based mail like yahoo where content resides on a remote server and you can only temporarily view your mails. For large corporations, it is more convenient than web based mail because you can download all your mails onto your PC and view them offline.

FORMMAIL
The most popular and widely supported form processor on the net. A form processor is a script that submits form contents to a recipient email address or database.

AUTO RESPONDERS
A program that automatically replies emails sent to a particular address. Useful if you have the same content to be delivered to people who send letters to a particular address.

EMAIL FORWARDING
Server program that redirects email sent to an address to another. For example if email is sent to sales@you.com, an email forwarded can redirect it to your personal inbox.

HITS
Number of visitors to a site, usually per day.
